Rocky Mountains

an overlanding family trip

Summer 2018
As my kids are getting older I figured this Summer would be the perfect opportunity for our family to explore Colorado together, but I wanted to find a way for them to experience what our Bexar Goods road trips are like. So, in true Bexar Goods fashion we rented a Sportsmobile from Adventure Travel Sportsmobiles. I've admired these rigs since I was a kid. They can be seen traveling all over the world-- decked out as surf mobiles, polar exploring rigs, and used by adventure photographers, journalists, globetrotting families and retirees.

We flew into Denver and picked up the Sportsmobie from Golden Colorado. The first day was spent in the backcountry getting the kids, Dana (8) and Jorge (4), acclimated to living for the next couple weeks in a relatively small but well equipped home on wheels. After getting accustomed to setting up and breaking down camp-- we set out to find some sand dunes in south central Colorado for some sand sledding. We had read that Great Sand Dunes National Park had some great back country campsites so we headed there to explore for a couple days. While this Sportsmobile is a very well-equipped rig you unfortunately pay for a earth roaming home on wheels with quite a bit of weight. We quickly got stuck in soft sand and had to air down the tires and switch into low gear to actually make it to the backcountry. This was the first of many times employing some of the many features this rig had to offer. From a winch to locking differentials to an onboard air compressor this vehicle was equipped to handle practically anything we would encounter on the trip. Years ago, our Bexar Goods family took one of our first trips to the Gunnison/Crested Butte area. It was an area where I knew we could set up base camp and spend time out of the rig getting dirty. From biking, hiking and trail running to fishing and frisbee-- Crested Butte was an awesome place where the kids could roam free and explore without too much supervision. We spent the next couple weeks enjoying campfire cooked hot dogs, hot chocolate, whiskey and vino (for the adults) adjacent to the Platte River and right below the mountains. Crisp nights under starry skies were the perfect conditions to end the evenings in the cozy double bedded Sportsmobile interior. Until next time Colorado... GR.
